Годину без світла планують провести мешканці планети 29 березня.
Всесвітній фонд захисту дикої природи (WWF) закликає компанії, а також приватних осіб в усьому світі 29 березня приєднатися до унікальної глобальної акції Година Землі (Earth Hour) і вимкнути на одну годину світло.

Вимикання світла пройде по Землі хвилею: населення буде гасити світло о 20:00 за місцевим часом, а вмикатиме, відповідно, о 21:00. Про участь у даному заході, який покликаний знизити споживання електрики та забруднення повітря на планеті, уже заявили понад 17 тисяч компаній і понад 237 тисяч осіб.

Подібні акції проводилися й раніше - у Сіднеї, приміром, вимикання світла минулої весни підтримали понад 2 мільйони жителів міста, у результаті чого споживання енергії в місті впало на 10,2%, що за скороченням викидів було еквівалентно одногодинному видаленню з доріг 48 тисяч автомобілів.

А 8 грудня 2007 року вся Німеччина в рамках кампанії Врятуйте нашу Землю також на 5 хвилин вимикала всі освітлювальні прилади, щоб привернути увагу громадськості до проблем навколишнього середовища.

Однак уперше гасити світло буде увесь світ. Це дозволить знизити навантаження на навколишнє середовище, але, головне, приверне увагу мільйонів людей до проблеми захисту природи та необхідності обмеження викидів парникових газів.

SAW seminar in Odessa

Dear all,

Last week we ran our annual SAW event for the participants of SAW programme in Ukraine. The event was sponsored by British Council Ukraine and hosted by British Council in Odessa. Two days of practical workshops and roundtables for the representatives of Odessa, Cherkassy, Zaporozhye, Kherson, Lviv regions and Crimea were an excellent networking opportunity.

This year we were ‘especially innovative’ as Climate Change topic has a new format and the results of the students’ findings have to be published using Making the News tool, so a teacher learns how to place PPP or Word materials online following simple instructions.

Have a look on MTN website at the reports on Climate Change topic produced by the teachers-participants of the workshop.

The organisers of the workshop have received positive feedback from the UK moderators about the work done in Ukraine.

We also closely follow your success in various projects that you report on your blogs. Now that the academic year is coming to an end we suggest that you write a brief summary on your school project activities and place it on your blog. It is our internal competition. Dear all,
Firstly, our warmest seasonal greetings with very best wishes from myself, Vakula and all the BC staff!

Secondly, it is nice to see your blogs being updated (well done, Smila, Brody, Artek, and Skadovsk!). This is a short review on the schools' activities based on the info obtained from Olga Pavlovna and from your blog posts. Teachers report:

- Marianna Nesteruk from Brody, Lviv region reports about successful SAW presentation for English teachers of Brody District: "The district seminar was held on 14 December in our school. The teachers were informed about SAW project and blogs. They were suggested to collect information about their schools and get ready with some ideas for SAW projects. The next time the district seminar will be held we plan to 'hire' a computer lab in our school and to try to get some hand-on experience in both projects."

- Kerime Seutova from Sudak, Autonomous Republic of Crimea sent to the BC two articles she had published in Sudak City Council newspaper ‘Sudakskiye Vesti’ (“News from Sudak”). Kerime tells about their school work on the topic Drinking Water and participation in the Travelling Computer project of the British Council Ukraine.

- The school from Lapaivka, Lviv region sent us photo report about their school and students (see picture to the right). They are interested in work on SAW topics.

- Two Natalies from Skadovsk participate in Christmas cards exchange project with a school from Greece and successfully prepared a group of students for Cambridge Young Learner examination. This week they have a Certificate Award Ceremony for pupils, their parents and teachers.

Enter the latest Science Across the World poster competition where pupils consider the classification of organisms, their adaptations, feeding relationships and interdependencies as well as other factors such as possible climate change for their own country in designing their animal or plant of the future.

Super prizes and certificates for the best posters from pupils aged 8-9 years and aged 10- 12 years. Teachers with the largest numbers of quality entries in each age category receive the full Future is Wild teaching resources including 3 DVDs.

This poster competition will run from 1st September – 31st October 2006.

Pupils should ensure their posters are annotated showing the characteristics of the animal or plant that has been designed.

At the moment Ukrainian sign “Ecologically clean and safe” is registered in international Global Ecolabelling Network and is acknowledged by 35 countries in the world, including European Union. It is especially important since Ukraine will be entering World Trade Organization and ecolabelling raises competition potential of the ukrainian products in the world market.
